Recently, the Ministry of Earth Science released 'Assesment of Climate Change over Indian Region.' It warned of increasing surface air temperature, declining annual rainfall, flood and drought risk etc.

Effects on Indian agriculture-

-High temperature and changing pattern will affect production pattern of crops. Agricultural production will also be affected.
- Floods can make India's peddy cultivation area vulnerable to erosion.
- A high concentration of water vapour can lead to intense rainfall during monsoon.
- Heating leads to vaporisation by which soil moisture is decreased. This can lead to drought. In availablity of potable water is also a possible problem.
-By all various factors- vulnerability to landless and poor and threat to food security is a concers. Also, starvation and malnutrition is linked to this.

The need of hour is to not only the steps towards nature conservation but also research in agricultural technology. There is an urgent need to develop crop varities which are more resilient to the vagaries of changing climate.
