Should internet freedom be sacrificed for national security?

Internet plays an important role in an individual’s life. This role is further increased due to the current corona pandemic. There’s no doubt in the fact that without internet, life cannot be imagined in today’s era. The one benefit which we have over our forefathers is the gift of technology. It helps us in a number of ways such as listening music, accessing different study material at one click. One can do shopping in minutes without wasting his precious time. Internet saves one’s time and help him in enjoying his life to the fullest. There are also individual who cannot enjoy this gift due to server all reasons. Under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, every individual has the right to life. Right to life does not mean a mere animal existence, it includes a healthy environment, quality education, proper services, etc. Our apex court, in a number of cases has expanded the scope of Article 21. Recently, the honourable apex court held that Right to Life also includes access to internet. However, it must be kept in mind that not all rights are absolute, these can be abrogated in the interest of national security, etc. If we look at fundamental rights in India, no right is absolute. All rights comes with a duty and reasonable restrictions. These restrictions are very important because a proper law and order situation has to be maintained in the society. If no restrictions are in place, then it would lead to utter chaos in the society. Protection of every individual’s safety is the duty of the state. These reasonable restrictions are the tools in the hands of the state to maintain a safe society. There’s no doubt in the fact that national security is paramount to other securities and without it, we cannot achieve an egalitarian and peaceful society.

Conclusion
It can be concluded that internet is very important for the citizens, it is a tool which helps an individual to grow to his fullest potential. It will enable the governments to deliver to its citizens all basic services. It plays very vital role. However, national security is above all fundamental rights. Absolute freedom cannot be given but totally denying this right is also against the principles enshrined under the Constitution. Steps must be taken by the government to ensure these services are not misused and proper checks and balances should be in place. Provide internet kiosks in every block and put them under surveillance to check any king of illegal activity, if found then, punish them.
