Yoga and Its Benefits : Study Material for Group Discussion Airforce Phase2

Yoga is the Sanskrit word for union. It involves a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices. Patanjali, who was a pioneer of classical yoga defined it as "the cessation of the modification of the mind". From time immemorial, people have been practising the art of yoga. It is believed that yoga was originated in the pre-Vedic period and was practised by the saints and the yogis to meditate and attain the path of enlightenment. But as time passed, it was seen that yoga had many health benefits and it was then that this culture started passing. Yoga gurus from India even spread the culture to the west and in time it became popular as a form of a physical exercise in the western world.

Yoga, as we call it, has evolved to a great extent since the time of its discovery and it has been divided into subcategories of its own. It includes religion, philosophy and various practices. Yoga uses breathing techniques, exercise and meditation and helps in improving the overall health and happiness of an individual. The benefits of yoga are innumerable. It is believed to treat diseases and illnesses such as cancer, heart diseases, asthma, schizophrenia, back problems, arthritis, and sinus. But for each of the problem, there is a specific set of asanas or exercise as we may call it that has to be practised by an individual on a regular basis. It also helps in improving the flexibility of one’s body and is considered as food for the soul and mind.
